Professor Robert Beckford is one the UK’s leading Black theologians, and a BAFTA award-winning filmmaker. Join Prof Beckford for a viewing of his After the Flood: the Church, Slavery and Reconciliation, a documentary exploring the role of the church in the slave trade, followed by a discussion led by the man himself.
Prof. Robert Beckford is Professor of Climate and Social Justice at the University of Winchester, and Professor of Black Theology and the Queen’s Foundation.
His activist scholarship ranges across a variety of media. For example, his most recent book, Decolonising Contemporary Gospel Music Through Praxis (Bloomsbury, 2022)interrogates the way that Gospel music reflects the colonial history of the Church, and explores new ways of making Gospel music that can embody Christ’s message of liberation. However, he is perhaps best known for his documentary filmmaking – especially his God Is Black (Channel 4, 2004), which ignited a fierce debate about racism in the Church of England.
