Luis Orlando Pérez Jiménez is a Jesuit priest from Mexico. Having received professional legal training before joining the Society of Jesus, Fr Luis worked as a lawyer at the "Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez" Human Rights Centre(Centro Prodh) in Mexico City from 2019 to 2020. His work with the Jesuit-runcentre exposed him to the plight of thousands of mothers who had lost their children because of forced disappearances and extra-judicial killings committed by Mexican military forces and organised crime. Now a doctoral student at the University College London Institute of the Americas, Fr Luis is researching these grave human rights violations, which have claimed over 100,000 victims in Mexico, and the culture of impunity surrounding it.
Fr Luis has a vast experience of work in the field of human rights in Latin America. From 2012 to 2014, he was a full-time research lecturer at the Intercultural Higher Education Institute (ISIA) in the southern state of Oaxaca, Mexico. From 2015 to 2018, he undertook duties at the Database for Human Rights and Political Violence at the Centre for Research and Popular Education (CINEP- Peace Program) in Bogotá, Colombia.
This talk is sponsored by Jesuit Missions, the international mission and development office of the Jesuits in Britain, in collaboration with the London Jesuit Centre.
